Description

Our two hour Highlights of Charleston walking tour guides guests through the historic French Quarter and South of Broad neighborhoods of downtown Charleston. Along the way, your guide will describe the long history, unique culture, architecture, and geography of Charleston and the greater lowcountry area, painting a detailed picture of how Charleston's tumultuous past formed the city now beloved by travelers the world over. You'll view some of the city's oldest houses of worship, burial sites, theaters, the forts of Charleston harbor, and the antebellum mansions that look out across the waters of the Cooper and Ashley rivers, among many other historic and picturesque sites. Our guides also offer their expert advice on other activities, restaurants, and bars for guests to explore once they've finished their tour.

Our Highlights of Charleston tour begins at the steps of the U.S. Customs House at East Bay and South Market Streets, in view of the City Market. The two hour walking tour first moves through the heart of the French Quarter neighborhood, stopping by some of the oldest structures in the borough, such as St. Philip's Church, the French Huguenot Church, the Dock Street Theater, and the Pink House. Exiting the French Quarter, we'll stop to point out museums that we recommend for personal exploration, such as the Old Slave Mart Museum and the Old Exchange and Customs House. As we move into the South of Broad neighborhood, we'll see some of the most photographed locations downtown, including Rainbow Row and High Battery, as well as the line of historic mansions facing Charleston harbor. You'll receive a description of the forts of Charleston harbor and the roles they've played in Charleston's many military engagements. The tour will end moving down Museum Mile on Meeting Street, close to other sites available to tour, like the Calhoun Mansion and the Nathaniel Russell house. Along the route, your guide will be providing you with a narrative of Charleston's many layers of history, from our early British Colonial period, into modern day, with emphasis on the pre-Civil War period, representing Charleston at its wealthiest. We'll describe for you the many architectural details of note contained in our historic structures, and we will dig into the factors that caused the city's financial highs and lows -- most notably the pivotal role of slavery in Charleston's economic story. You'll leave your tour with a deeper insight into Charleston's past, and how that past has shaped the city we walk through today. In addition to being licensed by the city's tourism office, our guides are charismatic, energetic, and passionate Charlestonians that are always trying the newest local offerings for dining, drinking, and entertainment. We're happy to provide our recommendations to help you shape the remainder of your Charleston adventure, beyond your walk with us.
