National Register of Historic Places for Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston, South Carolina fought against British taxation. Its delegates partook of the proceedings in both the Continental Congresses of 1774 and 1775. Francis Marion, aka Swamp Fox, defeated the British at the Battle of King’s Mountain by ambushing the British soldiers in the swamp. On April 12, 1861, the civil war began on the soil at Fort Sumter. States rights versus federal authority caused the social, economic and political unrest. Slavery was the underlying motive. South Carolina’s secession was inevitable.
Charleston, South Carolina’s annual, modern day events include the Spoleto Festival, Piccolo Spoleto, and First Night Charleston. The Spoleto Festival is a 17-day arts festival from those around the world; it specifically highlights opera, theatre and dance. The Piccolo Spoleto showcases South Carolina’s young artists for 2-weeks, precisely classical music, poetry readings, jazz, dance and theatre. First Night Charleston is a city-wide visual and performing arts celebration held on New Year’s Eve.
